Berlin in the early summer of 1988: thanks to the influence of his father Juergen Kaiser (Heino Ferch), a high-ranking officer with state security, Marco the punk does not land in court after an illegal punk concert. Marco reluctantly has to accept his father’s conditions and form up for his service as a recruit in the National People’s Army. While he is going through the tough ropes at boot camp where he unexpectedly gets the chance to prove himself, his girlfriend Anja (Karoline Herfurth) moves in with the Kaisers. The situation in the family comes to a head under the influence of the rapidly growing liberation movement in the Eastern block. Juergen Kaiser is worried about his privileged position, Hanna (Veronica Ferres) and Anja start becoming active in the New Forum political movement for more civil rights. An open fight escalates between the married couple. In the meantime, Marco is preparing for a secret mission with his unit. It is the 9th of November 1989 and the opening of the border will set an entire nation in motion. For Marco, Anja, Juergen, Hanna and Grandpa Walter (Michael Gwisdek), nothing will ever be the same again either…
