Dresden, early 1945: the young nurse Anna (Felicitas Woll) is smitten with surgeon Alexander Wenninger (Benjamin Sadler) and is to marry him in accordance with the will of her father, clinic director Carl Mauth (Heiner Lauterbach). Then she gets to know Robert (John Light), a wounded British soldier who has managed to blend in with the hospital patients without getting noticed. Anna finds the love of her life in him – until Robert confesses that he is one of the hated bomber pilots of the Allies. While the English bomber fleets start their motors and head toward Dresden, life in the nearly unscathed city carries on as usual. When Anna’s family learns about her secret relationship with Robert, things come to a dramatic head. The inferno begins.
